    Abstract

This study has been conducted with the intention of assessing the management of coastal properties and adaptation strategies in place to protect vulnerable coastal properties through the application of research and analytical techniques to a case study of Chichester Harbour AONB. Various methods have been used to identify defences currently in place within Chichester Harbour, and to assess the effectiveness of the identified defences. The level of awareness of flood risk to residents within the most vulnerable area has been assessed through the conduction of questionnaires; risk awareness has been identified as a crucial component of an effective adaptation strategy. Assessing the awareness of residents allowed for an integration of various data types to provide a comprehensive analysis of the overall effectiveness of coastal management and flood defences.
The study found that a multitude of factors are contributing to projected future increases in numbers and severity of flood events, within Chichester Harbour this increased risk of flooding is even higher due to a combination of topographic and long-shore beach processes. The performance of flood defences within the most vulnerable areas were found to be underperforming and inadequate for providing protection to the high number of properties situated in the area. Furthermore, despite having a high level of awareness, local residents within the most vulnerable areas displayed some confusion of the exact causes of flood events which had affected their properties in the past, and this may be crucial to allowing residents to take appropriate action to protect themselves and their properties.
