    Abstract

    The use of steel fibre reinforcement in combination with steel reinforcing bars in suspended concrete ground floor slabs is becoming a popular design choice. This combination of reinforcement types is being used with the intention of providing thinner and thus more economical floors, which can be installed in less time.
    Design and installation of steel fibre concrete with steel reinforcing bars is a very new process. A broad review of applicable literature has shown there is a lack of design standards and agreed codes of practice in this field. Experimental testing is also quite limited with regards to the behaviour of this combination of reinforcements in concrete slabs.
    Under these circumstances, this study carries out experimental testing on concrete slab strip specimens containing combined reinforcement. The objective of the study was to observe the samples behaviour at both ultimate and serviceability limit states. The observations provided valuable information about how concrete slabs reinforced in this way perform under load.
    The study found that the combination of steel fibres with steel rebar reinforcement in concrete slab strips resulted in a load carrying capacity which was less than the sum of the load carrying capacities of the two reinforcement types when used independently. This finding is significant as it shows that the behaviour of combined reinforcement is complex and the effects of increased rebar bond and reduction in member ductility must be considered during design.
    The work contained herewith also provides interesting information regarding the behaviour of concrete reinforced with combined reinforcement at pre and post-cracked state, as well as displacements and crack formation.
