    From very early on in his career as a film director Martin Scorsese has produced films structured around strong male protagonists; this has lead to Scorsese's oeuvre being filled with different representations of male masculinity. It is via the textual analysis of a set of male protagonist that conclusions have been formulated as to the influences on Scorsese as a director, and thus conclusions as to the style of represented masculinity in Scorsese films. It has been found in key film texts that Scorsese does repeatedly portray masculinity in distinct forms; narcissism is present in many varieties, as also is machismo. However, along with films that contribute to depicting modern masculinity as vulgar and socially non-progressive, Scorsese has worked in representing men in a more modern style and socially cosmopolitan. Therefore, an understanding has been gained into why Scorsese often reverts back in his films to portraying the narcissism and machismo discussed; it appears that there are a multitude of reasons for this. Scorsese has an obvious personal interest in masculinity and male bonding from his childhood. Nonetheless along with this there are many other reasons such as the social influences on Scorsese himself, for instance his Catholic background, and also on American society itself, such as the rise of feminism. Research has been undertaken in the form of primary film sources, and secondary book and journal sources to come to these conclusions.
