    Abstract

This dissertation aims to investigate the role of the ageing woman in film and television. I examine academic studies paying particular attention to Bazzini’s 1997 work which has as its starting point a negative image of the ageing woman as constructed on screen. By using my own analysis of the actresses Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Sigourney Weaver I shall discover whether this argument remains sixteen years later. A number of films and television series starring these actresses will be addressed to further my understanding of the area. Earlier roles of Dench, Smith and Weaver will be looked at in order to examine what changes may have occurred as they age. This dissertation will be structured in two chapters; physical appearance will be the focus of chapter one and the characters portrayed will be discussed in chapter two. These key themes will determine whether Bazzini’s argument remains within the media or whether the independency of women and sexual expression has determined a new representation of the ageing woman.
