    Abstract

The main area of discussion will be the relationship and significance between spirituality and art. The function and purpose of spirituality and spiritual art will be analysed, both historically and culturally, whilst evaluating what roles they can play in contemporary society. The debate will be set within Western culture, although may make comparisons with Eastern culture and wisdom traditions. It will be essential to deduce exactly what this category of art provides to the artist, its audience and in turn society. This in itself is something of a paradox; it is difficult to categorically say that spiritual art provides anything concrete. Spirituality by nature is impossible to prove in a tangible way. On the contrary, a lot of findings in modern science and quantum physics are beginning to draw parallels between scientific findings and ancient esoteric teachings.
The discussion will look at modern art and “outsider art”, and will look at movements in the 20th century that have had an impact on this area of study. It will be necessary to investigate examples of religious and sacred art, both in a historical and contemporary sense. Where necessary, reference will be made to relevant philosophy, psychology and theoretical material appropriate to the chosen subject matter.
