    Abstract

This project will investigate the factors that affect the management of international construction projects using case studies from the implementation of construction developments in an overseas military base. It will use the experiences of the author’s own work in Afghanistan as a Site Supervisor delivering a construction project and the knowledge of a Project Manager working for the same company that delivers infrastructure and facilities in harsh environments and specifically Afghanistan. The report explores the factors that make it such a challenge and identify current communication problems as well as focusing on the attitude towards different cultures and social aspects of a country that has been ripped apart by war. The results show clear communication and a thorough understanding of the differing cultures are both essential when implementing an overseas construction project and also explain how planning and experience within a company can forecast any other problems and risks to a projects success.
