    Abstract

In this dissertation I argue that the subculture of punk created a political resistance that led to the emergence of movements such as Riot Grrrl in the 1990s. I will then argue that punk’s male dominated culture necessitated particular modes of fashion and behaviour from the women who took part and continue to identify with the culture in the twenty first century. I claim that the resistant, outsider image embraced by these women allowed them to reclaim their identity in a way that challenged traditional femininity and as such, reinforced the freedoms claimed by third wave feminism.
