    Abstract

What is melancholy and what influence does the condition have on the artist, and in particular, how they pursue their work? One of the dictionary definitions of melancholy is “a pensive sadness” (Allen,1990, p.739). If we then look at the same dictionary definition of the word pensive, it is described as “deep in thought” or “sorrowfully thoughtful” (Allen,1990, p. 881). Does this therefore mean the melancholic are perhaps more insightful and a melancholic artist will produce art which is informed by such thoughtfulness?
