    Abstract

    For some children, the aftermath of a traumatic event or experience can make it difficult to express anxieties and emotions. If these children are left unattended to cope with these pent up emotions, it could lead to further psychological harm and psychiatric disorders. This study explores how the use of play therapy treatment can help support children in their social and emotional well-being following trauma. With the use of secondary research, the study determines how play therapy supports children who have been abused, hospitalised or chronically ill. The implementation of two specific play therapy theories and practices are discussed in-depth, focussing in particular on how the social and emotional well-being of children is supported through these therapeutic approaches. The approaches researched for the purpose of this study are Child-Centred Play Therapy and Gestalt Play Therapy. Both approaches were chosen for their variations in implementation in order to provide some comparison for the study. The results of the study concluded that play therapy is an effective form of treatment for abused, hospitalised and chronically ill children however the positive outcomes of the therapy are entirely dependent on the relationship developed between the therapist and the child. The study concluded that, of the two approaches researched, Child-Centred play therapy is the most versatile and effective to practice. But this is partially due to the limited secondary research available on the practice and effectiveness of Gestalt play therapy. Thus, this study has recommended that further research should be conducted into the use of Gestalt play therapy with children, particularly within practices in the United Kingdom.
