    Abstract

This study explores the tension that exists in the museum sector between care for the collection and care for the visitor. More specifically, it examines the difference in emphasis that museums place on their dual, and frequently conflicting, responsibilities. This study argues that all too often the emphasis in museum management is placed on the collection, at the expense of the public access. It argues that it is axiomatic that, if it is to have a future, the museum sector must look to engage visitors and provide for them not only rationally but also at an emotional level. By drawing comparisons with other sectors, suggestions are made as to how this may be achieved.
